Through a prioritising of light and connectivity, the refurbishment of Settlers Farm School actively breathes new life into four buildings that date back to the 1980s. In a reshaping that reflects more contemporary educational practices, the previous planning of isolated cellular classrooms – centred around a narrow atrium – is reworked to function more effectively and openly, while engaging with the natural elements.

As the foundation for how the new spaces would function, the atrium plays a vital role in connecting various groups, transforming disconnection into a series of shared learning areas. Fostering collaboration and engagement among students, the expansive glazed sliding doors now have an opportunity to directly link each classroom to the animated communal spaces, with a focus on enhancing accessibility and nurturing community.

Extending the music and drama rooms to open onto a newly created outdoor amphitheatre, the learning spaces are enriched through the layering of performance and social gathering opportunities. The newly defined entryway and a renovation to the existing basketball court also add to the diversity of the expansive upgrade. In both revitalising and opening up the existing buildings, the school transforms previously underutilised areas into dynamic spaces that support innovative learning methodologies.
