With uninterrupted views that look out over a nature reserve, Ukiyo – referring to ‘living in the moment’ – is a quiet, coastal retreat nestled amongst existing gums. As a self-contained pavilion located within Port Willunga, Ukiyo represents the first stage in a larger future vision for the site. Wrapped in Shou Sugi Ban timber, the form sits intentionally recessive amongst the established vegetation and landscape, with the focus on the home as a place of recharge and reset – with openings framing views out.

Anchored at one end with a prominent rammed earth wall, internally the pavilion is lined with a soft and subtle venetian plaster finish that acts as a canvas for the incoming light play throughout the day. Simple and relaxed, the chalky texture hints at a handmade sensibility that connects to many of the traditional beach shacks in the area. Adding warmth and an injection of nostalgia, a curation of restored 1960s furniture is dotted throughout the pavilion, utilising the owner’s own existing collection and pieces that they specifically restored for the spaces.

The form of the pavilion responds to the natural slope of the site, with the pitch of the floating roof following the fall of the terrain and the combination of natural and earth-toned textures mirroring the surrounding natural palette. The overhanging floating roof shades the northern glazing in summer, while framing views out to the native reserve beyond –  expressing an overarching simplicity of the home acting as a calm refuge.
