Designed to accommodate up to 90 children at any one time, The King’s Early Learning Centre is grounded in the principles of the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, which sees all of the encompassing elements within the environment as an essential component of learning. The refurbishment reimagines a former auditorium – previously shared by the school and local Baptist Church – transforming it into a centralised hub that encourages collaboration, exploration, and play.

Inside, the centre comprises three unique learning community spaces and a generously sized Atelier that serves as a creative and collaborative nucleus. The communal Piazza space also integrates kitchen and food preparation facilities for both learning and hands-on participation. A centralised skylight stretches along the Atelier space, drawing down natural light and opening up to the sky above, increasing an overall sense of scale. Flowing outdoors, a series of spaces (designed in collaboration with JPE) connect intentionally to the various indoor settings, diversifying the varied opportunities for play offered to children as a result.

A key design strategy sees the elevating of the existing 3m ceiling, where the formerly enclosed auditorium was converted into an open and approachable gathering space. Improving both acoustic management and access to natural light, the gesture results in a more activated and vibrant space, overlaying an energy conducive to learning. The King’s Early Learning Centre represents a commitment to the power of spaces that connect both outward and inward, engaging the natural elements and supporting development in a considered duality.
