Situated within expansive acreage where horses graze in the distance, Wistow House represents a contemporary interpretation of the farmhouse – focussed on the coming together of simplicity and a functional overlay. Comprised of three bedrooms and two bathrooms – alongside a self-contained studio – the rural home is designed as a main home, with the ability to expand appropriately for guest accommodation.

Initially designed with a clean, minimal and reductionist aesthetic, the project developed over time into a fully landscaped space that intentionally integrated with its environment. Constructed from a palette of non-domestic materials such as corrugated steel, timber, and recycled brick, the Wistow House captures a contemporary approach to rural life, where comfort, practicality, and respect for the surrounding setting were paramount.

Characterised by a distinctive floating roof, the living pavilion roof floats above a basic shed form – combining both a grounded-ness with a sense of lightness. High-level glazing beneath the roof then opens up to glimpses of the sky above, while oversized sliding doors connect the interior to the surrounding landscape, framing views of the sprawling property.

Considered elements are shaped by a desire to emphasise connections to nature and how the owners wanted to live. Moments such as the deep window seats allow and encourage a pause and reset, and together with recessed windows that soften the incoming sun and allow winter sunlight to penetrate deeply, solar control and being in a natural flow with the surroundings – increasing an awareness of the seasons – was key.
