Nestled within a sheltered pocket of coastal farmland near Penneshaw, this concept design explores a contemporary interpretation of Kangaroo Island’s agricultural vernacular.

The house is carefully positioned between existing stands of vegetation, providing protection from prevailing south-westerly winds, privacy from neighbouring properties and a discreet presence within the rural setting. Sitting low within the landform, the home minimises its visual impact while embracing expansive views across the property and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from the simple forms and honest materiality of the Island’s agricultural sheds, the design combines a restrained palette of galvanised corrugated steel and expressive structural elements. Deep verandahs and operable perforated corrugated screens provide shade, wind protection and seasonal environmental control while reinforcing the building’s connection to local rural architecture.

At the heart of the home, a sheltered courtyard creates an intimate outdoor environment that contrasts with the openness of the surrounding landscape. Internally, a gallery space has been integrated to house the owners’ art collection, creating a sequence of carefully curated spaces that celebrate both art and place.
