Project Overview

Nestled amongst the gentle folds of the site, Adelaide Hills House is energy self-sufficient and was envisioned to embody a quiet resilience. It’s long, twisting form follows the natural contours of the landscape and favours a northern orientation for natural light and warmth.

Along the length of the façade, a collection of sculptural rammed earth fins create a consistent rhythm, while a sweeping canopy sits above. Balancing both a strong connection to the ground and a light floating roof that opens upward, moments of contrast are integrated throughout. Framed views invite the outside in, while deliberately compressed thresholds enhance the experience of stepping between inside and outside. A similar simplicity is overlaid within the planning of the home, with spaces unfolding as overlapping zones, merging public and private spaces yet also allowing them to be kept separate.

The interior and architectural palette converge through a tactile blend of concrete, timber, and earth materials – capturing a feeling of permanence and longevity. Together with the consideration of orientation that welcomes a connection to natural light and warmth, systems such as underfloor heating and energy capture techniques focus on seasonal comfort. Encouraging a reflective connection with the surrounds through a modest approach, Adelaide Hills House uses restraint to respectfully co-exist amongst the existing natural elements.
